The internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks. In the 1960's, the United States government wanted to build a robust, fault-tolerant communication via computer networks which would become what we now call the “internet”. In accordance with one website, the first internet connection in Asia started in Korea. They began its operation in 1982 with two nodes. Other countries followed the development of IPv4-based computer networks in 1980's and beyond. According to one internet statistic, in 2012, Asia represented 44.8% of the population of internet users around the world. China, India and Japan alone host more internet users than Europe and North America combined. This proves that Asia is the leading contributor to the world’s internet user population.
Asia also hosts some of the countries that have the fastest internet connection in the entire world. Namely South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan etc. In South Korea, where the internet is essential, most of the people use it in their daily lives such as shopping, communicating and entertainment. It is also home to big electronic companies such as Samsung and LG. In Japan, most of its people use social networking sites such as Facebook and Mixi. Like South Korea, it is also home to big electronic companies such as Sony and Nintendo. In Hong Kong, most internet users spend their time searching the web and social networking.
The internet has become important for us Asians. It has helped us in a lot of ways. Like communicating with others especially with people from other countries. It also gives us information regarding news and other events from around the world. It makes cultural exchange easier, faster and more effective. Although we have the freedom to use the internet, we should also be responsible on how we use it.
