Living Quietly: What would happen to the world if there was no sound?

Sound is everywhere. Each morning we wake up, we can hear different sounds from our surroundings. Like the ringing of the alarm clock, music playing on a radio, chirping of birds, horns from cars passing by and neighbors talking. We have become accustomed to these sounds that the mere thought of living quietly with no sound is just unthinkable. But what if there was really no sound at all? What will happen to the world?

Having no sound would throw the whole world into chaos. No one will be able to communicate effectively, thus creating a chain reaction that will eventually affect everybody. People would have a hard time understanding each other and will cause confusion and frustration. Doctors, teachers, policemen, pilots and other professions wouldn’t be able to do their jobs properly, affecting those who need their services. The mass media, which serves as our tool of communication and information, will be very limited. Everyone will suffer as a result.

Aside from chaos, we will also experience dullness and boredom. Music and entertainment will have no meaning since we will not be hearing any sound. People will also be discouraged to start a conversation due to the fact that they won’t be able to express themselves or relay their messages effectively. Without sound, our lives will simply be empty. Lots of things will not be possible to do without sound. It is an important factor in our lives that we need in order to live and thrive.

Pictures paint thousands of words. Why?

We can say that pictures are a representation of the special moments that we want to preserve. Whether it is a photo of our loved ones, a portrait of beautiful scenery we visited during vacation or just a selfie picture we took in our spare time. Pictures also serve as a medium to convey a certain message. It is used in magazines, billboards and posters to advertise products and services. Artists also use them to portray emotions and thoughts through their works.

Each and every person has a different view and opinion regarding pictures. For some people, a certain art painting can have a deeper meaning than from what others could normally see. Advertisement images can also be interpreted in a positive or a negative way by consumers. Kids also have a different perspective than adults when it comes to pictures. Regardless of the kind of interpretation we may have of the pictures we see each day in our lives, the phrase “a picture paints a thousand words” is aptly true. Although a picture is a still image, it conveys a message in graphic detail that captures our attention than mere words can.

Each picture has a different story to tell. For most people, there are not enough words to describe the pictures that are precious to them. This proves that pictures are more than just images. It is an important moment in time that is preserved to help us relive those memories and experiences. This is why it is worth a thousand words.

The Power of Words

Hello! How are you? I’m sorry… I love you. These are just some of the words we say or write to our loved ones, friends and acquaintances. Words have a way of getting to us because they convey different kinds of feelings or emotions depending on what kind of message we want to get across. Words can inspire, give hope, make us happy and loved, sad or angry. Words are so important, whether it is expressed verbally or in written form, because they express how we think and convey what is in our hearts.

If we go back to the history of mankind, we will be amazed at how words have evolved through the ages. Words have contributed a good deal to the advancement of our civilization. Our ancestors have learned to communicate starting from the primitive sound language, and as time progressed, they developed their own vocabularies to cope up with their changing lifestyles. From spoken words, there emerged a more powerful and influential medium – the written word.

We are familiar with the famous phrase “the pen is mightier than the sword”.  This particular phrase was coined by English author, Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839 for his play “Richelieu; Or the Conspiracy.” Bulwer-Lytton may have coined the phrase but there were predecessors who have the same idea. Assyrian sage Ahiqar, who reputedly lived during the early 7th century BC, coined the first known version of this phrase. One copy of the Teachings of Ahiqar, dating to about 500 BC, states that “the word is mightier than the sword”. The general idea of the phrase may be interpreted as “words can be more effective than physical force and that communication can change the world for the better rather than wars”.

As time passes, words will continue to evolve, therefore becoming even more powerful and influential than it is today. It will play an important role in changing the world. Words can heal, empower and resolve conflicts; or it can hurt, discourage and cause more trouble depending on how we use it. That is the power of words.
