Changes in Communication

Communication has changed a lot over the past years. Back then, people used to write handwritten letters to each other. After that, the telephone was invented. It made communicating a lot easier as you were able to conduct a conversation over long distances. Another invention that has changed our way of communicating is the Typewriter. It was used to write characters by means of keyboard-operated types striking a ribbon to transfer ink or carbon impressions on to the paper, but these were going to evolve into even greater inventions. Like the cellular phones or more commonly known as cellphones. Basically, it’s a cordless and portable version of the telephone; it can make and receive telephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area. Another one is the computer, originally it was used to carry out a set of arithmetic or logical operations but people also began to use it for communicating via e-mail.

Technology has transformed the way we communicate. It made our lives easier and convenient. Nowadays, people just use their smartphones, tablets, laptops, to talk and call each other. They can send e-mails, they can video chat, send text messages etc. Although technology has brought a lot of conveniences, it also has its bad effects. One of the main problems people face is that when you type a message it’s difficult to tell the person’s emotions or feelings. Unlike while talking through a telephone, you can determine whether a person is angry or not by the tone of his/her voice. Another problem is that people, especially teenagers, have forgotten how to spell and write complete sentences. They have been already accustomed to their texting language.

In my opinion, there has to be a balance between communicating in real life and by technology. I also think we’re relying too much on technology. It’s true that it plays an important role in social interaction, but we must not forget the other forms of communication. The non-verbal form is just as important because not everyone has the ability to hear or speak, which is important for us to learn so we can communicate with other people with disabilities. Communication helps us in a lot of ways like expressing our views and opinions. It also enables us to rationally discuss coordinated activities and especially, helps us to understand one another. It will always be a huge part of our everyday life. I look forward to how communication will change in the future.
